Working on The Horus Heresy: Inferno is my biggest career highlight. I learned so much from my boss, Alan Bligh, about how to write a great narrative. Bringing the forge world of Zhao-Arkhad to life with his guidance and support, and learning how to turn narrative into compelling gameplay for the book's campaign, was one of the best creative experiences of my life.

A Bit About Me

Hi! I'm Emma, and I'm a freelance content writer based in Nottinghamshire, UK. I've been writing professionally for over 8 years now across a huge range of topics, niches, and industries, from tabletop game design to software reviews and (almost) everything in between. I've ghostwritten blog posts for car mechanics, written authoritative software reviews, and designed rules that have been played and loved by gamers around the world.

I'm not all work and no play, though! Well, I say that... when I'm not working, I'm studying for my BSc (Hons) Cyber Security degree with the Open University. I love painting miniatures, losing myself in virtual worlds, and cuddling my pets while I cozy up with a good book.

Who am I, really?

A pet mum

I've got a beautiful German Shepherd called Suki and a wonderful black kitty called Shuri. They're my whole world.

A space-faring adventurer

I love all things science fiction and fantasy. Star Trek and Star Wars are the two main loves of my life, but give me anything with dragons or spaceships and I'm happy.

A punk rocker

I love all kinds of music, but my main love will always be rock. I've seen Green Day and Paramore live twice. You'll find me modding for my friend's Twitch channel most weekends - Gemma's a rock DJ and one of my idols.

A self-improvement enthusiast

Tarot and journalling are my tools of choice for learning about all the things that make me, me. I love a good sound bath or meditation session - even if I do fall asleep from time to time!

A gamer

Hunting for lost treasure in Sea of Thieves, building cities in Timberborn, fighting bugs in Deep Rock Galactic - I've been playing video games since I was a kid, and I won't be stopping any time soon.

A gym junkie

The squat rack is my happy place and I love a good leg day. Strength training feeds my soul.

Work Experience

June 2019 - Present

October 2018 - February 2022

April 2016 - June 2019

Freelance Content Marketer @ Dragon Scribe Studios

Since I started Dragon Scribe Studios, I've ghostwritten across dozens of industries and niches and found a speciality in writing about software, technology, and IT. In the past, I've covered topics like:

  • DevOps

  • Platform engineering

  • Website builders

  • Marketing software

  • VPNs

  • Web3

  • And more!

Owner and Lead Writer @ Sass and Clacks

When I started pole dancing classes, there weren't many resources tailored towards plus-size people like me. So, I made my own, and taught myself the basics of SEO, digital marketing, and content writing to support other plus-sized pole dancers.

Forge World Writer @ Games Workshop

I produced work for The Horus Heresy Book 7: Inferno and Book 8: Malevolence, as well as The Age of Darkness Rulebook and multiple event brochures, flyers and downloadable rule sets. This included narrative content, rules content, and sales content. Most importantly, I learned how to craft a great narrative.

April 2015 - April 2016

Sales Assistant @ Games Workshop

I did a bunch of retail stuff, but what's most important is that it's here I first started writing professionally. I started writing weekly product releases and event announcements for the Warhammer World blog in 2016, building on everything I'd learned about running a WordPress blog as a blogging hobbyist.

The Before Time...

Before this, I did what every regular teenager did - worked retail and hospitality jobs. But I also wrote fanfiction (and no, that will never see the light of day), ran some random blogs, and wrote one edition of a fandom magazine for a qualification in college.
